A challenge in Basel

A technical advisor at Geberit has to be inventive. Only then can they find solutions to tricky problems – like Nicola Palmisano at the Roche Tower 2 in Basel.

As a trained plumber, Nicola Palmisano is well aware of the array of applicable norms and standards in the construction industry. The Italian native joined Geberit nine years ago. Since then, he has been dealing with enquiries from customers in industry from across Switzerland with his two colleagues.

As the 55-year-old explains, the industrial field goes one step further when it comes to standards. This is particularly the case when installing supply pipes that carry more than just drinking water. “However, we have always been able to find a solution,” he explains. According to Nicola Palmisano, lots of research and precise preparation are essential.

Under pressure

This also allowed him to gain the trust of pharmaceutical giant Roche and the plumbers at Bouygues E&S InTec Schweiz AG. In mid-2020, the plumbing company was tasked with laying the Mapress pipes for the drinking water and fire extinguishing water and other liquids at Roche Tower 2 in Basel. At 205 metres, this is currently the tallest building in Switzerland. “In the Roche Tower, the pipes have to be able to withstand pressures of up to 16 bar,” says Nicola Palmisano. However, some of the pipe dimensions planned here didn’t meet the requirements – at least at first.

Customer service a priority

Nicola Palmisano pulled out all the stops and worked out a solution. Once special approval was granted, it was clear that Mapress was the perfect solution for meeting Roche’s demands – provided the pipes were pressed using a special tool. During the on-site training, the technical advisor ensured that the some 200 plumbers became familiar with handling the pressing tool and were able to carry out installation correctly. This is a service that is appreciated at the Roche construction site and beyond.
