Less waste, fewer journeys and less CO2 in the air – the ecological redesign of the packaging for the Geberit sanitary flush unit is making a huge impact.

Sustainability has been a part of everyday life at Geberit for the past 30 years. The search for sustainable solutions is reflected both in the development of new products and processes and the revision of existing ones. This also includes how packaging material is handled.

Ecological redesign

A good example of this is the packaging of the Geberit sanitary flush unit. The unit is now sent out to customers in packaging without an expanded polystyrene insert. Furthermore, the packaging is now made exclusively from cardboard. In doing so, no compromises are made in terms of stability.

The difference in size between the old packaging (left) and new version (right) is clear to see.

Less material, less CO2

Geberit sanitary flush unit

Sanitary flush units are used both in public buildings as well as in private accommodation, where stagnant water leads to health risks. The sanitary flush unit automatically flushes the pipes, thus preventing germs from multiplying.

Expanded polystyrene is considered problematic as it is not biodegradable and can only be reused with difficulty. Dispensing with this material is thus a good thing for the environment. The new packaging of the sanitary flush unit also has other benefits, with 40 percent less material now required for the packaging. This means less waste. Furthermore, the cardboard can also be reused. With the absence of the expanded polystyrene insert, the packaging volume has also been reduced by more than one-third, which has a positive effect on both transport volumes and storage volumes. As more boxes can now fit on the truck, around 250,000 fewer transport kilometres per year have to be driven. This results in savings of around 33 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year – a clear plus for the environment.
