Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport is one of the world’s major international hubs, with more than 70 million travellers every year. The high passenger numbers and non-stop operation place huge demands on the sanitary facilities. A temporary solution is required for the planned renovations back in 2018. Plugaloo is born: a modular sanitary concept tailored to the special requirements of an airport – from meeting strict regulations to perfect logistics, including quick installation and dismantling.
A sophisticated system
For the concept development, the project owners from consultancy firm Airport Creators team up with Geberit. “Geberit impresses with quality, reliability and fast service,” explains Rogier Doffegnies, co-owner of Airport Creators. The result: a modular system with prefabricated elements called Plugaloo, which can be installed in less than 24 hours. The only requirement is power, water and waste water connections less than 200 metres away.
Plugaloo uses a wide range of Geberit products, from Duofix installation elements to toilets, urinals and taps. Geberit Connect optionally networks the devices and provides usage data in order to plan cleaning and maintenance work efficiently. Originally planned as a temporary facility, the first system at Schiphol Airport has now been in operation for over six years and is used by over 100,000 people a year. Additional installations have since followed, most recently in Montreal. Plugaloo is taking off – with Geberit on board.
