The expansion of the production plant in Lichtenstein (DE) not only brings more capacity, but also renewable energy: a new photovoltaic system produces up to 870 megawatt-hours of solar power per year.

The production halls in Lichtenstein (DE) are bathed in the first golden rays of morning sunlight. Solar panels are now working on the previously unused roof – and cover around 10,000 square metres of roof space. The system has been connected to the grid since the end of April 2025.

Integral part of the strategy

The new photovoltaic system in Lichtenstein is the latest of three PV systems at Geberit. Installations in Pfullendorf (DE) and Matrei (AT) start operation back in 2024. This represents a further step by Geberit towards a sustainable power supply. The CO2 strategy stipulates that the proportion of renewable energies is to be further increased throughout the company, always taking energy efficiency and costs into consideration.

More renewable energy in the grid

The new PV system in Lichtenstein can generate around 870 MWh per year. This is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of over 200 households. “We use around three-quarters ourselves, and feed around 200 MWh into the grid,” says Michel Landgraf, Team Leader Infrastructure in Lichtenstein. Why isn’t everything used in-house?

The answer is a simple one: while operations constantly require energy, the sun sometimes delivers varying amounts of power. As a result, additional power from the grid is needed in rainy weather or in the evening, while excess energy is fed into the grid on weekends (when there is no production). Whether or not the solar power is used in-house – the new system certainly makes a contribution to a more environmentally friendly power supply, as each kilowatt hour fed in increases the share of renewable energy in the grid.
