Less packaging, more routine
The Geberit production plant in Pottenbrunn (AT) is making plastic packaging fit for the future – with scientific methods, tested down to the smallest detail, and with an eye on the big picture.
Geberit Packaging Strategy
From 2030, the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation requires companies to ensure that plastic packaging contains at least 35 percent recycled material and be 70 percent recyclable. The Geberit packaging strategy is also based on these targets.
“Smaller bags, more recycled material, less plastic.” When it comes to the objectives, Bartłomiej Cupta gets right to the point. Together with his team, he is responsible for a pilot project at the production plant in Pottenbrunn aimed at optimising packaging made of plastic. This is one of several packaging projects across the Group. It incorporates the most important pillars of the Geberit packaging strategy: reduce and replace.
350
packaging films are individually analysed and tested.
Thinking with the whole company in mind
Implementation is complex: switching to a packaging material with a higher proportion of recycled material has an impact on machines and production. Meticulous tests are unavoidable. The goal is a solution that works in all Geberit plants. “We are thinking with the whole company in mind,” says Bartłomiej Cupta.
Scientific approach
There is also a focus on standardisation: around 350 different packaging films are used across the Group that could potentially be replaced by recycling material. For all of these, the quality management laboratory tests material from both new and recycled plastics in order to see any discrepancies in good time. The machines can then be set optimally and problems avoided – in all Geberit plants.
